The Soul Garden
문득 내면의 소용돌이를 느끼곤 한다. 아픔, 흥분, 고통, 상실 등의 감정들이 미묘하게 섞여 소용돌이 치고, 그 소용돌이가 커져 심장이 터질 것 같다. 그럴때면 난 작업실로 뛰어가 작품 앞에 앉고, 마침내 심장이 터져 그 폭발이 내 작업의 자양분이 된다.
그 속에서 작은 싹이 튼다. 희망의 싹 아니면 고통의 시작….
아무튼 새 생명의 시작이다. 중요한 것은 그것의 좋고 나쁨을 떠나서 그 터져나오는 에너지가 내 작업의 자양분이 된다는 사실이다.
이년 전, 난산으로 인해 삶과 죽음의 경계를 오간적이 있었다. 그 순간 내가 하나의 자아나 몸이 아닌, 각기 다른 장기들의 집합체로 인식되었다. 스스로를 통제할 수 없고 육체적 고통의 두려움에 자존감 따윈 중요치 않은…
심장,허파,간,대장,소장으로 이루어진…장기가 자라나는 화분.
현재 우리는 모든 것이 과학적으로 세분화되어 연구, 분석, 분리되는 세상에 살고 있다. 심지어 유전자 조작이나 장기 복제를 이용해 불치병을 치유하고 뇌를 이식하여 젊음을 되돌릴 수 있는 시대가 도래할 것이라고 한다. 확실히 이는 매력적인 이야기이긴 하나, 과연 인간 고유의 의식과 자아가 뇌를 옮긴다고 해서 옮길 수 있는 걸까? 내 결론은 NO이다. 나는 우리의 온 몸에 자아가 각인되어 있다고 믿으며, 우리가 가진 능력과 의식이 영혼이라고 생각한다.
이렇게 물질로 젊음조차 살 수 있다고 말하는 세상에 우리가 진정 지켜야 하는 것은 무엇일까? 우리의 정신 즉 영혼이다.
현재 우리의 영혼은 어떠한가? 마른 가뭄에 턱턱 갈라진 논바닥처럼 되어 있지는 않은가? 하늘에서 비가 내려 삼라만상에 기운을 주듯 우리의 영혼에도 단비를 내려주자. 책을 통해, 대화를 통해, 만남들 통해..,.마음이 문제지 시간이 문제는 아니다.

The Soul Garden
I sometimes feel in chaos. Emotions like sadness, excitement, pain, and loss mix delicately becoming a vortex making my heart explode. Whenever I feel like this I run to my studio, sit in front of my work and let my heart's explosion become the source of my work's motivation
2 years ago I delivered my son. I had a very difficult delivery and felt close to death. That moment I felt I wasn't completely myself and recognized myself as a sum part of my organs. I could not control myself physically and experienced a big fear of physical pain of death. I now feel that a human being is a sum part of organs such as heart, lungs and liver.... - the organ house plant.
Nowadays we live in a society in which everything is divided, studied and analysed scientically. The idea of being able to transfer the mind of a terminally sick person to another body by cloning or using gene therapy to delay aging is attractive. But can you move a mind or a soul to another body. I thing and hope not. I believe that an individual has his or her own self, our own faculties and identity constitutes our soul. What do we preserve and save in this society? It is our identity - soul. Our souls are dry and bleeding in the contemporary society. It is our decision to nourish our soul. It is what we have to do.
